Young Carers

At Sewell Park Academy we recognise that some of our students are young carers and want to ensure that should they need a little more support, this is available. This support will enable them to feel supported by the school and have equal opportunities to their peers.

Norfolk County Council defines a Young Carer as:

‘Children and young people aged under 18 who look after or support a family member or a friend who is disabled, ill or misuses drugs or alcohol. The child or young person may help with practical tasks or emotional support for their disabled or ill person or others in the family household.’

At Sewell Park Academy we are proud to have received the
Young Carers Friendly Tick Award. This award recognises the
support we have in place for Young Carers at Sewell Park and
the work we do to raise awareness of them with both staff and students.

Support offered to Young Carers at Sewell Park Academy:

  • Point of Contact at Sewell Park Academy for Parents, Guardians and Students through our Year Leaders
  • Homework Club for students who find it difficult to complete homework at home due to being a Young Carer
  • Referral to Norfolk Young Carers and Assessments from Norfolk County Council if requested
  • Practical support
  • Raising awareness with staff members
  • Support from our Young Carers Champions - Mr Gowlett and Miss Lemmon
