Dear Parents and Carers,
As you are aware, it is the Government's ambition that schools reopen in some manner from the 15th June for face-to-face contact with Year 10 students, in order to better support home learning.
Given the complexities of organising a return, we will not be able to firmly confirm if we will be in a position to reopen for this provision until the end of next week, June 12th.
Our plan, if we are in a position to reopen, is to provide face-to face sessions for small fixed groups of students one day per week, either a Monday or Tuesday. These school-based sessions would involve a review of previous learning, teacher instruction on new material, independent student work on the material in the session, as well as clear setting of well-structured work that the students will be asked to be complete at home before the next session in class
Although our planning has not been finalised, the sessions will likely be delivered between 9.00 AM and 12.50 PM. Taught sessions will commence with core ideas in English, Maths and Science before involving option subjects later in the term. There is a possibility that we might be able to increase the number of days in school in later weeks in order to provide more support for some options subjects.
We will be contacting you all directly this week to confirm if you would be wishing to take up this offer for your child for the weeks beginning of the 15th and 22nd June (dependent on confirmation of opening).
In order to plan safely, it is vital that we have confirmation in advance to be aware of which students will be attending in the first two weeks of sessions (June 15th / June 16th & June 22nd / June 23rd). A similar firm parental commitment to students attending for the final three weeks of the academic year will be required also, prior to that block of sessions beginning. Following a phone conversation with you over the coming days, we will send out full details of timetables and rooms next week to those who confirm that their son/daughter will be attending. Please be aware that we will be unable to allow any student to attend for whom we have not received advance notice of the intention to return to classes.
Finally, to allay any fears or concerns that you may have with regards to the safety of students and staff, we will ensure that strict social distancing measures are in place. This will include clear instructions with floor-markings to ensure safe lining up before entry to the classrooms. Each student will have an allocated work space which they use for each session, stationed 2m apart from any other student or staff member. We have opted to use the science labs, each of which contains sinks and liquid soap to support frequent hand washing. Breaks will be staggered to reduce other opportunities for mixing.
Should you wish to visit the school in order to better understand these COVID-19 control measures, then during your phone call with the school, we will make arrangements with you to allow one adult from your household to meet with Dr Evans and myself and inspect the arrangements, following social distancing guidelines.
We hope you have remained safe and well and hope that we will be able to welcome the students back to Sewell Park Academy safely very soon.
