Year 9 Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award Scheme

Dear Pupil and Parent/Guardian,

We will be running the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award Scheme for pupils in Year 9 starting in September 2019. The Award is a challenging programme of activities, which will help participants learn new skills, help others, and experience adventure. Furthermore, many organisations, such as employers and universities, look favourably upon participation in the Award Scheme and what it says about the young person who has achieved it.

The Award is split into three levels; Bronze, Silver and Gold. Students will start working towards their Bronze Award with the aim of having achieved the Bronze level in the summer of 2020. Each level is split into four sections – Service, Skills, Physical Recreation and Expeditions. It is entirely up to the pupil to decide what they would like to do to satisfy the requirements for each section; it could be something they are already involved in or something new they might like to try. There is no exam and you cannot fail. It is not a competition – participants just need a bit of resilience and perseverance.

The Expedition Section is what we focus on at Sewell Park. Mr Moore will teach the students all areas of navigation and camp craft during Monday Enrichment sessions in school and through one or 2 day hikes. There will also be two weekend Expeditions, a practice and an assessed expedition.

The majority of the cost for the Award will be funded by the School. Students will also be able to borrow most of the camping equipment we will need. However, we do ask for a one off voluntary contribution of £60. This will cover registration with the D of E and cover all weekend camping expeditions. The only extra costs will be for food during expeditions. We will ask for the contribution upon successful acceptance on the award and can be paid in instalments. However, please contact us as we could help with funding if necessary, we want every young person to have a chance at this.

Anyone interested in taking part should complete the attached form and hand to Mr Moore no later than Friday 19th July. Places may be allocated on a first come first served basis if there is a high response. We are only able to take on 21 students.

If you have any further queries please feel free to contact Mr Moore at Sewell Park Academy.

Yours Sincerely,

Mr Moore
