Sewell Park lead the way! We are the hosts for a pilot scheme to empower young men.

Recently, Sewell Park Academy was the venue for a conference organised by Inspired Youth. They’ve run the very successful Inspired Women mentoring programme, which encourages local business women to inspire small groups of young women in schools and colleges.

It’s really worked, and it’s helped lots of young women find out more about themselves, how to be more confident, and how to increase their communication skills.

Inspired by the programme’s success Inspired Youth have decided to explore the possibility of a similar programme aimed at young men.

We were the chosen Academy for the first conference! Some of our male students were the delegates to the event which featured talks from local business men who told us about their backgrounds, inspirations and achievements.

It was an interesting selection of speakers. We heard from James Groves, from Indigo Swan, who outlined his career path the rough the finance sector to his current role as Head of Customer Experience. ‘Be confident’, he said, ‘and don’t be afraid - everybody messes up sometime’!

Robert Lambert, the international speedway rider told us about his inspirations, and how it’s important to follow your dream, but not lose sight of academic achievement. And Ben Stone, of The Anchorage Trust, explained his goal and aspirations in setting up a charity for young homeless people.

Guided by conference leader Natalie Davies everybody then discussed subjects such as who had inspired them, what pressures young men felt under and the importance of role models.

From there, the conference delegates were asked to help ‘shape’ the new programme, contributing ideas on how many sessions there should be, how many people should be in each session and even what the programme should be called.

The result is that Inspired Youth will take away all the ideas that Sewell Park’s young men contributed and begin to formulate the programme.

It promises to be an exciting, stimulating and informative project - with Sewell Park as the pilot!

Quite an achievement for us!
